Residents of Catalonia and Madrid will be buying the most travel insurance this Easter
Many Spaniards will be taking the opportunity to travel during the Easter holidays. According to data from InterMundial Seguros, a broker specializing in travel insurance, only 25% of Spaniards traveling during these days will have insurance. Of that 25%, residents of Madrid and Catalonia will be the most likely to purchase travel insurance, accounting for 35.8% and 15.2% of all insured trips, respectively. These regions are followed by Andalusia (8.1%), the Valencian Community (7.4%), and the Basque Country (6.6%).
When comparing these percentages against the total number of travelers heading out this Easter, the 25% of Spaniards who will be insured are distributed as follows: Madrid (8.95%), Catalonia (3.81%), Andalusia (2.03%), Valencia (1.86%), and the Basque Country (1.66%). The lowest figures are in Ceuta (0.01%) and Melilla (0.02%).
Of the Spaniards traveling with insurance this Easter, 39.6% will be traveling within Spain, 25% will be traveling to a European country, and 35.4% will be traveling to a destination outside of Europe. Regarding trip duration, most will be away for 3 to 7 days, with an average of 2.2 days for domestic trips, 3.7 days for trips within Europe, and 5.7 days for trips outside of Europe.
Looking at the type of insurance purchased, 38.8% of policies for Easter travel are travel assistance insurance (coverage including medical expenses, luggage issues, civil liability, or cancellation), 23.8% are ski insurance, 22.4% are trip cancellation insurance (which reimburses the traveler for non-refundable costs if a trip is canceled), 10.8% are sports travel insurance, 3.4% are group insurance instead of individual policies, and 0.7% are cruise travel insurance.
Of those purchasing cancellation insurance, the majority (69.7%) will use it to guarantee a full refund of their trip, 24.2% only for accommodation refunds, and 6.06% for transportation.
