The 5 most visited destinations by Spaniards with travel insurance
Japan and the United States top the list of destinations for which Spaniards most frequently purchase travel insurance for trips abroad, according to a report by Intermundial, a broker specializing in travel insurance, which outlines the "Key Trends in Travel Insurance for Summer 2024." The ranking of the top 5 international destinations where Spaniards choose to be proactive and purchase travel insurance is rounded out by Morocco, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
The Intermundial study also reveals significant patterns regarding how far in advance insurance is purchased. Planning ahead is a trend that is gaining ground year after year, although many still wait until the departure date is near. In fact, 50% of travelers purchase their insurance in the same month they depart, and 24% do so the month before.
On average, insurance is purchased 30 days before the trip, although there are significant variations depending on the destination. Japan, for example, shows an average lead time of 53 days, while Morocco involves much more immediate planning, with insurance purchased just 13 days before departure.
It is worth noting that the percentage of insurance policies cancelled before a trip is negligible, as travelers remain confident and committed to their plans. However, Intermundial offers flexibility for cancellations on its products, provided the policy has not yet come into effect and no cancellation coverage claims have been applied.
Average cost of travel insurance: €110
Regarding how much we spend on insuring our vacations, the report shows that the average cost of travel insurance is around 110 euros. This is the investment Spaniards are willing to make to ensure peace of mind during their holidays.
Forecasts for Summer 2024
Looking ahead to the summer, Intermundial expects these trends to continue, with Southeast Asia, the United States, and North Africa—including countries like Tunisia and Morocco—remaining the most visited and insured destinations. Long-haul travel insurance for places like Thailand and Japan is expected to be particularly popular, as well as coverage for closer destinations like Morocco and Turkey.
As for the most popular products in their catalog, the Totaltravel range leads the way, now featuring new coverage options such as pet protection—which includes repatriation and trip cancellation, among other benefits—and greater flexibility in purchasing. The Totalsports insurance, aimed at active travelers, and Go Schengen, for non-Spanish residents, are also shaping up to be preferred options for the coming summer.
With the summer vacation season just a few weeks away, Intermundial recommends that all travelers purchase insurance tailored to their specific trip that offers comprehensive coverage for every family member. Buying travel insurance is a quick process that doesn't take much time, ensuring you can enjoy your well-deserved vacation with peace of mind and without any setbacks.
