98% of skiers enjoy the snow with insurance, yet nearly half have insufficient coverage
The vast majority of ski enthusiasts, 98%, enjoy the snow with insurance, although 45% of them settle for only the basic coverage from their lift pass or resort. This is revealed by a survey conducted at the end of the snow season by Intermundial, a leading broker in travel and gadget insurance distribution since 1994, in collaboration with Nevasport, a digital portal specializing in winter sports.
The survey, which includes responses from over 300 readers, offers an interesting snapshot of travel and safety trends among ski and snow lovers. The report shows that 58% of skiers take more than five trips a year, while 37% travel 2 to 4 times, and only 4% limit themselves to a single getaway.
Regarding destinations, 25% of the skiers surveyed prefer to combine Spain with the rest of Europe, followed by 23% who choose destinations exclusively within Spain. Additionally, 34% of respondents combine skiing with other sports such as mountaineering, snowshoeing, hiking, mountain biking, and climbing.
As for company, the data is clear: for snow getaways, 36% prefer to enjoy the mountains and their sports with friends, and another 36% choose to travel with family. Trips as a couple account for 17%, while the remaining 10% enjoy the snow solo. The survey also reveals that the average age of skiers is 48 for men and 50 for women, reflecting an active and mature population on the slopes.
42% of survey participants admitted to having experienced some type of incident or mishap while enjoying snow activities. When it comes to mountain and snow sports, safety is a crucial aspect, and travelers perceive it as such, although only 22% purchase their coverage through a specialized travel insurance distributor. Most of the skiers surveyed limit themselves to the insurance included with their lift pass or resort (45%) or federation or association insurance (27%).
Specialized solutions for worry-free travel
In light of the survey data, Intermundial reminds us that lift pass or resort insurance offers very limited coverage, leaving skiers without adequate protection against the various situations that can arise, from an off-piste accident to unforeseen expenses due to a serious injury or, simply, luggage theft.
"A multitude of incidents can occur during mountain sports activities, from a minor injury to the need for rescue, to which we must add the usual travel mishaps, such as damaged luggage. The survey tells us that four out of ten skiers have suffered some incident in the snow. Enjoying our sports practice with total safety is always the best decision, and that is why, at Intermundial, we recommend purchasing specific solutions with broad coverage that guarantee the best assistance should you need it," says Carlos Uceda, Business Development Director at Intermundial.
