More than 70% of trip cancellations by Spaniards are due to health reasons
Health issues account for 72.4% of trip cancellations or interruptions in Spain.
The main causes for trip cancellations from January 2015 to the present, according to data from InterMundial, a travel insurance specialist, were related to health issues of the traveler or their family members (72.4%), followed by work-related reasons (12.1%) and cancellation for any reason (8.4%).
Among health-related causes, the majority—47.9% of the total—were due to a serious illness or accident, including unscheduled surgeries not anticipated when the trip was booked, followed by cancellations due to various incidents involving first- and second-degree relatives (accidents or death).
The second most significant cause relates to work issues, whether it be starting a new job (5.6%), a change in the company's vacation schedule (4.3%), or an unexpected layoff, which accounts for 1% of the reasons for canceling a trip before it begins.
In third place are cancellations due to "cancellation for any reason," meaning the traveler does not need to provide any justification for the cancellation. Although some travel insurance policies on the market offer a long list of covered causes, having this option is always a welcome feature for canceling a trip for reasons not yet covered by insurance companies.
The remaining causes for cancellation include various factors, such as failing school subjects, sitting for civil service exams, a travel companion canceling their trip, or being summoned for election duty.
